5 (Very Honest) Things I Always Bring to a Shoot
...plus a few things that just make the day better.
Let’s be real—prepping for a photo shoot is part intention, part chaos. After over a decade of photographing people, brands, businesses, and entire vibes, I’ve learned exactly what I need to bring to every shoot to make the day go smoothly—and a few things I bring just because, well... I’m me.
Here are five things I always show up with:
1. Cameras. Plural. Always.
Obviously I bring my main digital camera—can’t exactly do the job without it—but I usually have a film camera slung over my shoulder too. Film slows me down in the best way and adds that dreamy, imperfect layer I love. And for quick day-of sneak peeks that are perfect for Instagram stories? I use my little Fujifilm. It’s light, it’s fast, and it makes everyone feel like they’re in on the magic as it’s happening.
2. Extras That Save the Day (Or at Least My Sanity)
Extra batteries. Extra memory cards. A scrunchie I swear I won’t use but absolutely will. My Apple Watch so I don’t lose track of time. Imodium, because food allergies don’t care if I’m shooting somewhere cute. Basically: I’ve learned to plan for the shoot and the chaos.
3. My Stanley (ugh, yes), Because I’m a Cliché Who Hydrates
Listen. I didn’t want to be a Stanley girl. But marketing works, okay?? It keeps my water cold, it’s easy to carry, and somehow it’s become part of my “get in the zone” routine. You gave in too, don’t even lie! That’s the power of good branding—and yes, that’s exactly why brand photography matters. When something looks good, feels intentional, and keeps showing up? People remember it!
4. Vibes-Only Music (Yes, I’m Pulling Out My Phone)
If the studio (or space) is too quiet, I will absolutely put on music. And if I say I’m going to play “folky bullshit,” I’m serious and it’s what I listen to. Think: soft indie, mellow rock, and songs that make people relax without realizing it.
Because silence can be weird. Music helps people drop their guard.
5. The “Should We Grab a Cocktail First?” Energy
This one’s more of a mindset than a literal item, but still: I bring it. Sometimes a shoot feels better when you ease into it—not with stiff poses or forced direction, but with a drink, a breath, and a little fun first. I love giving people space to relax and just be themselves. That’s when the real magic happens.
TL;DR?
I show up with gear, backup plans, bad jokes, and enough realness to keep things grounded. Whether you’re launching your brand or just need new content that doesn’t feel forced, I’ve got you. Let’s make something good!
